How did all the big bets finish up over the weekend ???Â
Big Bet punters tasted a share of success on the weekend but the bookies still finished the ahead.
The good luck started in the first of the day at Rosehill for on punter who took on the bagmen and backed the bottom weight, ACHIRA, locking in $17.50 with Sportsbet for their $2,000 investment when markets were released on Wednesday.
As it turned out, it was a masterful stroke as the Maurice filly went to the gates a $10 chance with the books. That turned out to be a $35,000 payday for that particular punter.
The luck rolled on into the very next race when one punter outlaid $4,000 @ $2.30 on MAZU to take out the Listed Darby Munro Stakes. That punter was in the cue to collect as they passed the 200m mark as the race-favourite went on to win by 2.5 lengths, eased over the line.
Fortunes swayed both ways in the Golden Slipper (as is the case every year) with punters and connections on both sides of the fence when it came to the end result.
One big bet punter was determined to cover themselves every which way as they shelled-out a cool $35,000 @ $1.90 (a place) on race favourite COOLANGATTA.
Fortunately for them, the Written Tycoon filly had enough left in the tank to grab third prize, leaving that punter to collect $76,000, a tidy $36,000 profit for their investment.
The news wasn’t all good for other punters however, and one of those included a bet of $40,000 @ $2.60 a place on the winner’s stablemate, SEJARDAN who finished a well-beaten ninth in the race.
Meanwhile, down south at Flemington, one lucky punter also took to the early odds available on the All Star Mile favourite ZAAKI with a $3,000 bet @ $3.30 with Neds on the British-bred galloper, while another punter locked in $3,000 @ $3.20 early on with Palmerbet.
A wise move as it turns out as he was sent to the gates a firm $2.40 elect. Drawn the outside gate (15), he made light work of that, going on to a comfortable 1.5 length victory in the end.
