Fireburn heads field of six for Champagne Stakes
Fireburn, the short-priced favourite for Saturday’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m), has come up with gate two in a small field of six.
The Gary Portelli-trained daughter of Rebel Dane is shooting for six in row following her ultra-impressive victories in the Golden Slipper (1400m) and Inglis Sires’ (1400m).
A win in the Randwick event would see Fireburn become just he seventh horse in history to complete the two-year-old Triple Crown that consists of the Slipper, Sires’ and Champagne Stakes.
Sires’ runner-up She’s Extreme will be looking to turn the tables here, as will jockey Tommy Berry who was taunted by Fireburn’s rider Brenton Avdulla as he charged past She’s Extreme in the Sires’.
Snitzel colt Williamsburg has been impressive winning his past two on Heavy 10-rated tracks at Rosehill and Randwick, and he’s drawn gate three for jockey Kerrin McEvoy.
The remainder of the field consist of Let’srollthedice, Counttheheadlights and Wealthy Investor.
