BEST BET 🏆
Race 7: No.8 ZERKHAN
John Thompson saddles-up ZERKHAN here who is third-up and sporting the blinkers again, looks set to give this contest a real shake today. Last start, the Real Steel colt came off an impressive first-up Maiden win at Hawkesbury when he did well to take home third prize at Wyong with plenty against him that day. With Keagan Latham backing-up off that maiden win, he faced Class 1 competition on a Heavy 10 over 1600m. With 59kgs to carry, he sat outside the leader most of the way where he overraced to the turn, and simply ran out of gas in the run home, still battling well enough to grab that minor prize over the line. Latham sticks with him here and from gate nine, he maps to settle in the first half-dozen, with some cover today. Fitter for two runs back and placed in all three heavy track appearances, he looks a serious contender in this event.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 6: No.11 SHE’S GOT VEUVE
The Chris Waller-trained SHE’S GOT VEUVE has been in good touch of late and at the weights today, looks a serious contender for the major prize here. Last start, the Merchant Navy filly found the podium for the third time in her past four starts when she took home third prize in a Class 1 set weights event over 2100m at Gosford. She didn’t quite run the trip that day, weakening over the final 200m. Dropping back in distance today, she has Tommy Berry as the new pilot and gets her chance here to bring up win number two for her connections.
BEST VALUE 💰
Race 3: No.9 HEADLEY GRANGE
We start proceedings today with one at big odds as HEADLEY GRANGE takes his place in this contest, third-up and in great touch this time in. Last start, the Exosphere gelding came off a first-up win at Kembla Grange when he took on a BM64 field and on a Heavy 8, beat home all but one in the 1200m event. He settled last of the eight runners and worked home well to grab the silver medal that day. He comes off a seven-week freshen-up today and performs well on fresh legs (unbeaten in two first-up appearances to date). Jay Ford returns as the pilot, after steering him to that first-up win. He is expected to settle back in the field and fitter for two runs back, he will should be running on at the finish and looks a solid each-way chance today.
