Strathalbyn Tips 02/02/2024

BEST BET 🏆

Race 7 No. 3 MARVELOUS NIGHT – ($5.60)

Heather Lehmann has her front-running Strathalbyn track specialist MARVELOUS NIGHT fitter for three runs back this campaign. Not sure we’ll take much from the steward’s report on this one with Maggie Collett allowing her mount to bowl along at a good tempo in front. The pair were no match third-up for the class of Billie Bronx while knocking up to run third. Good to see the horse race well on a flat turf track following his second-up win at Strathalbyn. This race will round out most of his work with a 1350m BM64 beckoning on Strathalbyn Cup Day next Sunday.

NEXT BEST 🥈

Race 6 No. 1 MONTIGN – ($6)

The good horse MONTIGN made his way back to winning form as apprentice Maggie Collett brought him with a well-timed run to score over 1500 metres at Gawler. Trainer Stuart Padman had given Montign a lengthy let-up prior to that win which was two starts ago. He had been given four weeks between runs again before getting out to the mile on the bigger track of Gifford Hill. Maggie Collett again allowed Montign to relax in his own rhythm as the field walked along. Montign got hauling up the long straight under his big weight to prove too strong once again. Gets out to a trip for the first time in a race where there should be more pressure up front.

BEST VALUE 💰

Race 1 No. 12 THE POSTIE ($8.10)

Local trainer Grant Kluske has found form at the right time as he prepares his team for Strathalbyn Cup Day. Maiden runner THE POSTIE has been ticking over okay in deeper maiden races. Got a long way back over this track and trip before working home between horses. The Postie finished just behind the placegetters that day before racing over 1400 metres at Oakbank. She ground home between horses again to finish fourth, beaten just over three lengths from the winner Alainge. The Postie struck a good race here last time when again making ground to finish third. She’s making steady progress under Justin Potter and finds a winnable race on Sunday.
