Cairns Racing Tips 9 March — can Desert Grit go again?
Cairns Racing Tips 9 March — can Desert Grit go again?
There’s one headline on this Cairns card and it’s not subtle: Desert Grit turns up in the BM65 carrying the grandstand (132.2lb), chasing a third straight win, and doing it at a track where he’s already proven he handles the assignment — he won on his only start here. That’s a data point, not a lifestyle, but it matters on a day where plenty of these runners don’t bring any Cairns history at all.
We’ve got four races on the turf before the meeting was later marked Abandoned across the board. I’m still treating this as a form-and-structure exercise: who was set up to get the right run, who was trending the right way, and which stables/jockeys are worth following next time they’re in a similar spot. If you want Cairns racing tips that read like a mate talking you through it rather than a spreadsheet, you’re in the right place.
Cairns — the setup
Surface: Turf
Going: Not provided in the feed
Meeting status: All races listed as Abandoned
Course form is thin for most of these fields — for a lot of runners you’re looking at one prior Cairns run (if that). So I’m not pretending we’ve got a stack of “track specialists” here. Where the course numbers do help is with the riders and the bigger stables that keep turning up and getting paid.

The one course profile that isMS L Morrison. Eight rides at Cairns for three wins and five placings is proper evidence, and it’s relevant because Morrison pops up on multiple chances through the meeting.
Jockeys worth respecting at Cairns (minimum 5 rides)
| Jockey | Runs | Wins | Places | Win% | Place% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MS L Morrison | 8 | 3 | 5 | 37.5% | 62.5% |
| Krysten Swaffer | 6 | 1 | 4 | 16.67% | 66.67% |
| S Cormack | 6 | 1 | 4 | 16.67% | 66.67% |
| Aidan Holt | 7 | 1 | 4 | 14.29% | 57.14% |
| N Thomas | 8 | 1 | 1 | 12.5% | 12.5% |
Trainer-wise, the only course volume on today’s card that clears the “percentages mean something” bar is Trevor & Peter Rowe (11 runners here historically, one win, four placings). It’s not a strike-rate that scares you off backing against them, but it’s enough to say: they come here often, and they do get some of them into the money.
Race-by-race — Cairns predictions
Race 1: It’s A Life I Want Mdn Plate — 12:46, 1039m
Booming Belief looks the one I want to be with straight away. In a 2YO maiden where most of them are blank pages, he’s one of the few with a form line that suggests he’s already learned what race-day feels like (3-). The map angle is clean enough too: barrier 5 gives Michael Murphy options to hold a spot without doing anything silly early over a sharp trip.
The obvious threat is Sixty Nine Grange from gate 1. In these short-course juvenile races, the inside draw can turn into a paid parking ticket if the horse can begin cleanly and hold the rail. If Wiggins can make it a “first 200m decides it” race, the favourite can get beaten by position more than ability.
What I’d do: Small win bet Booming Belief. If you’re playing wider, save something tiny on Sixty Nine Grange purely off the draw.
Race 2: Austhai Mdn Plate — 13:21, 1367m
Here’s the puzzle: which of these actually wants to win a maiden? A lot of the exposed runners have had their chances, but She’s Got Lyrics at least arrives with a profile that says she’s still moving the right way. That 4-5672 progression is the kind of “gets closer, learns to compete, finds the line” pattern you can trust more than the serial also-rans. Barrier 3 helps N Thomas keep her in the race from the first 200m rather than chasing.
The danger is Essay Wine (draw 5). The form is light (8-3), but that last-start third suggests a spike is possible, and S Cormack is a rider worth listening to around here — six Cairns rides, four in the placings.
Recent form check (last 90 days): She’s Got Lyrics has had four runs for one placing (25% place rate) in that window. That’s not a boom profile, but it matches the idea that she’s knocking on the door rather than going backwards.
What I’d do: Each-way She’s Got Lyrics if you can get a fair price. If the market is tight, it becomes a place-only play.
Race 3: Tlg Haulage (Bm65) — 13:56, 1367m
The market problem (if this race had been run) would’ve been weight versus momentum — and I’m siding with momentum. Desert Grit is the deserved top pick. Yes, 132.2lb asks a serious question, but he’s coming off back-to-back wins (323-11), he draws gate 1 to control his own fate, and he’s already won on his only Cairns start. For a horse in form, the inside gate plus the right ride can make weight feel lighter than it reads on paper.
Recent form check (last 90 days): two runs for a win and two top-three finishes. That’s exactly what you want from a horse carrying a penalty — he’s not scraping into this grade, he’s bringing authority into it.
The danger is Materialist (draw 8, 130.0lb). The 633-12 profile screams consistency, and if Desert Grit ever gets cluttered up from the inside, the horse with the cleaner late lane can pinch it. I also respect Rhegion (797-21) as the “blow the race apart” type — he’s placed on his only Cairns run and Wiggins rides — but he does have to do it from gate 6.
What I’d do: Win bet Desert Grit. If you’re building a multi, he’s the banker. If you want insurance, save a smaller quinella with Materialist.

Race 4: Kensington Park (Bm55) — 14:33, 1531m
Contrast race: Vouchers brings the “right now” form, while Thirteen Under brings the “arrives after the penny drops” angle. I’m sticking with Vouchers. The form line (7-5112) tells you he’s found what works, and this looks like a tidy placement in a BM55 where he shouldn’t have to improve much again to win. Barrier 3 is ideal at the trip: close enough to hold a spot, wide enough to stay out of the worst traffic.
Recent form check (last 90 days): Vouchers has had four runs for two wins and three placings — that’s proper strike and it fits the eye-test of a horse that’s thriving.
Thirteen Under is the danger I’m most wary of. He won on his only Cairns start (again: one run, so don’t overcook it), and he arrives off a 926-41 pattern that suggests a flat patch is behind him. If he can land midfield from gate 2 and peel out at the right time, he can absolutely run past them.
I’m also not tossing Faraway Downs (gate 4) — he’s a last-start winner (form: 1) and that’s always a live profile in this grade — but he’s a 3YO taking on older legs and has to prove he can repeat it.
What I’d do: Win bet Vouchers. Small saver on Thirteen Under if you don’t want to be sitting there watching your main danger lob the gun run from gate 2.
The plays
Even with the meeting later abandoned, the betting shape was clear enough. NAP: Desert Grit (Race 3, 13:56). Gate 1 plus a two-win streak is the profile I want when a horse has to carry weight — he doesn’t need luck to get into the race, and he’s already ticked the Cairns box by winning on his only run here.
Value: She’s Got Lyrics (Race 2, 13:21) as an each-way look. That form progression into a maiden is often more reliable than backing something on reputation. If the price had drifted at all, I’d have happily taken it.
Banker for multis: Desert Grit again. If you only want one “anchor” horse on the card, that’s him.
Each-way: She’s Got Lyrics.
Course angle: keep respecting MS L Morrison at Cairns — eight rides for three wins and five placings is a real sample, and when Morrison lands on a live horse in these northern meetings, the market doesn’t always adjust quickly enough.
Next time Cairns throws up a similar card, I’ll be watching for the Rowe stable’s better-backed runners — they run plenty here, and the right one with the right map is usually the one you want.

My Cairns best bets on the card were Desert Grit in Race 3 (draw 1, chasing a third straight win, and he’s won on his only Cairns start) and Vouchers in Race 4 off the strong recent form line (7-5112) and a soft gate (3).
Where can I find the best odds for Cairns races?
