Doomben Racing Tips 23 May 2026 — can Waller own the juveniles?

C J Waller doesn’t need much of an invitation at Doomben, and this card gives him a proper one: a live 2yo pair in the Bill Carter and a progressive sprinter in the fillies and mares handicap. That’s the hook for me because it shapes how you bet the meeting. If the Waller runners turn up in the right lanes, you’re either with them or you’re setting out to beat a very reliable machine with riders that know how to execute here.

We’ve got three races in the dataset for Doomben (turf), from 1750m down to the 2yo 1476m. I’ll keep this tight and opinionated: one race looks like a bet, one looks like a disciplined each way play, and one looks like a watch unless the market gifts you something silly. If you’re hunting Doomben racing tips without burning an hour on replays, this is the shortcut: who maps to control it, who gets the weight swing, and which stables have the muscle to make the race their own.

Doomben today — the setup

Plenty of these runners are lightly exposed at Doomben. That matters because a lot of the “course stats” are one or two runs and that’s a data point, not a trend. So I’m using the track numbers mainly for riders and bigger stables where the sample is meaningful, and leaning on race shape, barriers and profiles to do the heavy lifting.

Jockeys worth respecting at this track (meaningful samples, 5 plus rides):

Jockey Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
J B McDonald 6 2 5 33.33 83.33
Vlad Duric 18 5 9 27.78 50.00
M Rodd 27 5 12 18.52 44.44
Ben Thompson 76 13 32 17.11 42.11
Ryan Maloney 47 7 20 14.89 42.55

Trainers with volume at Doomben (5 plus runners):

Trainer Runs Wins Places Win% Place%
T J Gollan 133 21 66 15.79 49.62
R L Heathcote 55 7 21 12.73 38.18
C J Waller 62 10 24 16.13 38.71
Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald 21 3 10 14.29 47.62
M J Dunn 38 5 16 13.16 42.11

Race-by-race: Doomben predictions

Race 1: Sky Racing (Bm78) — 11:43, 1750m

It’s a barrier race first, and a form race second. Over 1750m with a chunky field, I want a horse that can hold a spot without burning petrol, and Larrikin Rogue (gate 1, Collett) gets the exact run you’d draw if you were allowed to cheat. He comes in off a “2208-3” profile, which reads like a horse that can mix it at the level when he’s got the right set up, and today he should: low gate, manageable weight (127.8), and a trip that lets Collett ride patiently rather than chase speed.

I’m happy to take on a few of the wide draws in a race like this. The Neasham and Archibald pair Seven’s (gate 6, Tommy Berry) and Sosino (gate 19, Maloney) both have the stable class to win, but you’re paying for talent while dealing with very different maps. Seven’s gets a decent alley; Sosino from 19 needs luck and timing, and at this trip you can’t afford to be three wide with cover for too long.

The horse I’m keeping as the danger is Express Payment (gate 4, Rodd). The form string “330-33” is the classic “always there” profile. He’s also placed on his only Doomben run, which is worth a note even if it’s just one visit. If he lands one one the fence with cover and the leaders overdo it, he can be the one making the last 250m look very uncomfortable for my pick.

Play: Win bet Larrikin Rogue. If the market lets you, save on Express Payment in exactas and quinellas rather than trying to cover half the field.

Race 2: Ladbrokes Stradbroke Calcutta Book Now Hcp (C6) — 12:18, 1312m

The market usually chases last start winners in races like this, but I’m more interested in who can repeat the effort with the right run at Doomben, because 1312m can punish anything that gets cluttered up. Mercurial Lady is the bet for me. She brings a “1-7331” formline that screams consistency with a finish, and she gets D Moor to ride her in a race where decision making from the 600m matters more than pure sectionals.

Two small but useful course notes on her: she’s placed in both Doomben visits, and her recent form across the last 90 days stacks up as properly solid rather than “one good day”. She’s had three runs in the period for one win and she’s hit the frame every time, with an average finishing position of 2.33. That’s not fluff, that’s a horse turning up and doing her job.

The danger is the one that makes you sweat from the 300m: Tribbiani (Marshall) with that “241121” form. He’s a winning habit horse and they’re always hard to catch once they roll into the right rhythm. The knock is that Taylor Marshall’s Doomben record is fine rather than frightening (20 rides, two wins), so I don’t want to take a skinny quote if the map turns messy.

I’m also respecting the Waller and McDonald pairing through Now Is The Hour (gate 16). It’s a tough draw, but McDonald’s Doomben strike is real: he wins a third of his rides here and he hits the frame more often than not. If he finds cover early, that’s the horse that can make me look silly.

Play: Each way Mercurial Lady. If she’s $6 or better, I’m happy to be a little more aggressive on the place side.

Race 3: Ticketmaster Bill Carter Stakes — 12:53, 1476m

Here’s the question: do you want to take on Waller and McDonald in a 2yo stakes race at Doomben when the strike rates stack and the horse profile says upside? I don’t. Katoto gets my vote. He’s “21” from two starts and he’s paired with J B McDonald, who has the best meaningful Doomben rider numbers on this card: six rides, two wins, and five placings. That’s a jockey who rides the track like it owes him money.

Katoto’s recent form is also clean. Over the last 90 days he’s had two runs for a win and a placing, which tells you he’s already operating at the right level and he’s not just a one run wonder. With young horses, that’s what you want: early proof, then a step into a race with a bit of pressure and a bit of theatre.

The danger is I Am Dirty (Baker, Rachel King). Bjorn Baker’s Doomben record is excellent even on a small sample (three runners, two wins and three placings), so when he bothers placing one here you take the hint. I Am Dirty’s “61” says he’s progressing, and he draws gate 3 to get a soft run right behind the speed. If he’s tough, he can make this a proper scrap from the turn.

If you want the blowout runner to keep in your trifectas, it’s Auric Star (D Moor) with “22”. Two starts, two seconds: that’s a 2yo who keeps finding one better. If the Waller runner cops traffic at the wrong time, Auric Star’s consistency can suddenly become very valuable.

Play: Win bet Katoto. If you’re playing multiples, box him with I Am Dirty and Auric Star rather than trying to be a hero with six legs.

The plays

NAP: Katoto (Race 3, 12:53). The “21” profile is what you want in a juvenile stakes race, and McDonald’s Doomben numbers are as close as this meeting gets to a reliable edge: he wins a third of his rides here and he lands in the placings most weeks he turns up.

Value: Mercurial Lady (Race 2, 12:18) each way. She’s placed in both Doomben runs and her last 90 days read like a horse in the right zone: three runs, one win, and she’s been in the money every time. If the market keeps her honest, take it.

Banker for multis: Katoto again. It’s not creative, it’s practical.

Each-way anchor: Mercurial Lady. If you’re only having one “protect the bankroll” bet on the card, make it that.

Course angle to keep in mind: When you see McDonald at Doomben, you price him as a weapon, not just a name. He’s not riding bulk junk here and his mount selection tends to reflect that.

Next time a Waller 2yo arrives in Brisbane with McDonald sticking, don’t wait for a flashy price. The good ones rarely get missed twice.
