Ipswich Racing Tips 26 Feb — can Vandyke strike again?

There’s a very Ipswich-looking story running through this meeting: the right stables turning up with the right horses for the right grade — and in a couple of races, it’s hard to miss the intent. David Vandyke only has a small sample at this track in the stats we’ve got, but he’s already landed a winner here from just two runners, and he brings two live ones today: Noble Decree in the C6 and Our Jewel in the C1. That’s not noise — that’s placement.

We’ve got six races on turf and no official going published in the data. That doesn’t stop you betting — it just means I’m weighting barriers, map and who handles a genuinely-run 1400–1900m, rather than trying to be a hero about “track bias”. These Ipswich racing tips lean into the races where the form is already pointing one way and avoid pretending the messy ones are solvable.

Ipswich — the setup

Surface: Turf.

Going: Not published in the provided racecard data. With that uncertainty, I’m leaning harder on race shape, barriers, and runners who look like they can sustain a run (rather than needing the track to suit perfectly).

Course history is thin across most of today’s fields — a lot of the runners have only one or two Ipswich starts on record, which is a data point, not a track “love affair”. The more useful angle is the people: a couple of jockeys and trainers do bring meaningful volume here.

Race-by-race

Race 1: Tab Mdn Hcp — 14:05, 1476m

Bent Bridge gets me early because this looks like a maiden where experience and repeatability count. His form line (4-2724) screams “turn-taking” rather than “talentless”, and Ben Thompson is the sort of rider who’ll put him in the race from a gate that doesn’t need panic (draw 8). If they run this honestly from the 600m, he’s the one I trust to keep finding.

The danger is Outta Reef on debut for Tony Gollan with Ryan Maloney from gate 2. That’s a proper setup in a 1400-ish maiden — low draw, stable that places them well at Ipswich (Gollan places 13 of 19 runners here), and a rider who doesn’t waste good barriers. If the newcomers have any engine, this is the one most likely to show it first-up.

Staking: Small win bet Bent Bridge. Saver/cover quinella Bent Bridge–Outta Reef if you want to respect the debutant angle.

Race 2: Bear Cave Plate (C6) — 14:40, 1476m

Does the weight swing matter, or does the class runner just win anyway? I’m landing on Noble Decree. He’s the obvious “right horse” in the race on form (11-323) and he gets Ben Thompson, who rides Ipswich well enough to trust the decisions (11 rides here, 6 placings). Even from gate 6, he maps to find air and momentum — and that’s what wins these midweek 1500m races.

Liberty Steps is the pest. Two straight seconds (470-22) says he’s right on the doorstep, and Corey Sutherland will likely have him in the first handful from gate 2. If Noble Decree is even a touch flat, Liberty Steps can pinch it by controlling the tempo and kicking at the right time.

Staking: Win bet Noble Decree. If you’re playing exotics, I’d lean to exacta Noble Decree over Liberty Steps rather than going wide.

Race 3: Poco Vino Hcp (C1) — 15:15, 1476m

I’m with Our Jewel because the map gifts him the sort of run that wins Ipswich races: Ben Thompson from gate 1, and a horse who comes here off a last-start win (33931-). You don’t need him to be a star — you need him to be professional, hold the rail, and lift when they quicken. This looks like that scenario.

The race has a couple of live profiles around him. Chevallum has only been here once and won — again, not a trend, but it tells you he handles the place — and his overall form (21) is the sharpest in the field. The query is barrier 8 at this trip; he may have to do a bit of work early to hold a spot.

I’m also respecting the Waller pair: Hermione Prancer arrives off 5-771 and Cavaretta isn’t far away on paper either (90315-). Waller hits the frame with more than half his Ipswich runners (7 placings from 12). But if they get shuffled midfield from their gates, Our Jewel gets first crack.

Staking: Win bet Our Jewel. If Chevallum drifts to a backable price, save on him — his upside is real.

Race 4: Barrier Reef Pools Mdn Plate — 15:50, 1859m

This is the race where I’m happiest to be opinionated. Weekend Spirit looks like a horse crying out for this sort of trip, and Ryan Maloney is a serious booking for Jack Bruce in a maiden that lacks depth. The form is simple but strong: 4 then 2 (42). That’s progression you can bet on, and from barrier 5 he should get a clean, economical run into the race.

The danger is Oakfield Galaxy. The 4-7823 line says he’s right there, and he draws 3 — perfect to hold a spot and keep building. If the tempo crawls and it becomes a 400m dash, that inside run can be gold.

One more for wider punters: Pass The Peak (barrier 9) might improve with the extra ground, but he’ll need B Lerena to make the move at the right time — Lerena’s Ipswich strike-rate is modest, but he does enough placing to trust him in staying-run races (8 placings from 19 rides).

Staking: Weekend Spirit win. This is the best betting race on the card for me.

Race 5: River 96.9fm Hcp (C2) — 16:25, 1859m

The market will probably gravitate to the topweights, but the race reads like it can punish anything posted three-deep early. I’m siding with Cool Running purely on how the run sets up: gate 1, Angela Jones aboard, and a horse whose form says he can mix it when things go right (49-801). Jones rides Ipswich like she knows every bump in the ground — eight rides here for three wins and she hits the frame three-quarters of the time. That’s the kind of local edge I’m happy to pay for in a tricky handicap.

Piston Rebel is the obvious danger on recent form (2313-) and he carries the grandstand at 132.2. If he’s simply better, he can sit outside the lead and grind them into the turf. But from gate 9, he needs luck and/or petrol early — and over 1859m that matters.

I’m also giving a tick to Jungle Prince as the “hit the placings again” horse: he’s placed on his only Ipswich start and comes off an 82 last time (989-82). If they overcook it up front, he’s the one who keeps coming.

Staking: Cool Running each-way. Save on Piston Rebel if you don’t want to be beaten by raw class.

Race 6: Great Northern Hcp (C2) — 17:05, 1312m

The market problem here is that people will look at the big names and forget the simple map. Doyle gets the one gate, he carries a lightish 115.7, and Benjamin Osmond can ride a patient race when the inside is there to be used. Over 1312m at Ipswich, that combination often decides the contest before the 600m. His form (4-14) says he’s already in the zone.

Meadowbrook is the danger, and it’s not complicated: he won last start (3226-1), and Desleigh Forster’s record at the track is solid enough to trust (three runners for two placings). Draw 5 also gives Vlad Duric options.

Meldubious (gate 13, 131.1) can absolutely win — he’s got the class profile (14-104) and Maloney aboard — but he’s the one who needs the race to unfold kindly from the outside. If he’s posted three-deep, you’re relying on him being better, not just equal.

Staking: Win bet Doyle. Quinella saver Doyle–Meadowbrook if you want to be conservative late.

The plays

I’m keeping it straightforward at Ipswich: back the horses who are trending the right way and have a map that doesn’t require miracles.

  • NAP: Weekend Spirit (Race 4, 15:50) — 4 then 2, up to 1859m, Maloney booked, and a barrier that lets him build instead of sprinting off the corner.
  • Value: Doyle (Race 6, 17:05) — low draw and light weight are real assets at this trip; if he’s even money in the legs turning for home, he’s a bet.
  • Banker for multis: Our Jewel (Race 3, 15:15) — gate 1 with Ben Thompson in a race where several rivals may have to do work early.
  • Each-way: Cool Running (Race 5, 16:25) — Angela Jones’ Ipswich record is strong (8 rides, 6 placings) and the inside gate keeps him out of trouble.
  • Course angle to keep: keep following the Ipswich riders who consistently put you in the finish — Jones and Thornton both ride the track well enough that barriers matter a little more when they’re steering.

If Vandyke keeps sending a small team and landing them in the right grade, he’ll become the Ipswich angle you circle before you even open the form.

FAQ

What time does racing start at Ipswich today?

The first is at 14:05 (Race 1: Tab Mdn Hcp over 1476m).

What is the going at Ipswich today?

No going is published in the provided racecard data (all races are listed as turf with the going field blank). That’s why I’ve leaned on barriers and map — like Our Jewel from gate 1 in Race 3 and Cool Running from gate 1 in Race 5.

Who are the top trainers and jockeys at Ipswich on today’s numbers?

On meaningful sample sizes from the stats provided, M J Dunn stands out with 5 wins from 10 Ipswich runners, while T J Gollan is the reliable placer with 13 placings from 19. In the saddle, Angela Jones has the best profile here today: 3 wins and 6 placings from 8 rides at Ipswich.

What are the best bets at Ipswich today?

My best bet is Weekend Spirit (Race 4, 15:50). The backup plays are Our Jewel (Race 3, 15:15) as the multi anchor and Doyle (Race 6, 17:05) as the late win bet from the inside draw.

Where can I find the best odds for Ipswich races?

Odds weren’t available via the odds feed for this meeting at the time of writing (no bookmaker prices returned for any race IDs). For Ipswich odds, check prices directly with your preferred bookmakers closer to jump time and compare the win market for each race.
