Morphettville Racing Tips 18 July — can Stokes land a double?
One of those Morphettville days where the placement tells you plenty
Two runners from P Stokes jump off the page here, not because I’m guessing who’s flying at home, but because the card says the same thing twice: these are horses that keep putting themselves in the finish and keep getting set up to win. That’s usually when you stop trying to be clever and start trying to get paid.
We’ve only got three races in the data set for this meeting, all on turf, and the themes are clean: a staying benchmark where barrier and weight matter more than flash, a maiden where the right draw can turn “nearly” into “today”, and a 3yo BM66 where the recent winner has to prove it wasn’t a one-off.
If you’re here for Morphettville racing tips, the work’s already been done for you below: who I want to back, who can beat them, and the one race I’m happiest to take a proper swing at.
Morphettville — the setup
The track form profile across today’s runners is mixed. A lot of these have only one or two tries at Morphettville, so you treat those as a reference point, not a “track specialist” badge.
What is usable: a handful of jockeys with real volume here, and a couple of trainers who repeatedly have their team ready to compete at this circuit. That matters when races are thin on exposed class edges.

Odds note: bookmaker pricing wasn’t available from the feed for these races at time of writing, so the plays below are form and setup driven rather than price shopping.
Race-by-race
Race 1: The Fotobase Group (Bm78) — 11:45, 2461
Placo is the one I want onside early because this race sets up for a horse that can hold a spot from a low draw and keep rolling. Gate 1 at this trip is a weapon if Teagan Voorham can make it a staying rhythm rather than a messy stop-start affair. The recent form line 134341 screams consistency, and he’s the runner in this field most likely to get every chance without needing the breaks to go his way.
He’s also got enough Morphettville exposure to matter without overplaying it: four goes here for a win and another placing. Not a “specialist” stamp, but it’s more certainty than most of these bring.
The danger is Flash Alice. She’s been trending the right way for a while (that 4U3122 profile is the definition of “always in the fight”), and Harry Grace is a genuine Morphettville operator with 55 rides here for 9 wins and 26 placings. If she lands in the first three pairs from gate 5, she can outkick them late.
What I’m not doing: taking short odds about anything giving weight away and needing luck from wide. Miracle Spin (gate 8) might be tough, but you’re paying for resilience while betting against map.
Staking: Win bet Placo. Small saver quinella with Flash Alice if you like insurance.
Race 2: Ule Hoof Oil Mdn Plate — 12:22, 1094
Here’s the question that matters: who gets the cosy run and who gets stranded doing work? In maidens, the map is half the result.
Street Legal looks like the horse who keeps finding one better, then turning up again and doing it properly. The form 382-22 says he’s ready to win, and the draw 1</strong gives Harry Grace the simple instruction: hold the fence, don’t panic, let the race come to you. He’s had two runs at Morphettville and he’s placed in both, which is enough to trust he handles the place.
There’s also a clear stable angle without overcomplicating it: Stokes has a big sample at this track (145 runners) and keeps landing them in the money often enough to respect. This is the sort of race where that matters because plenty of these are still learning how to race.
The one that can spoil it is Stand Alone. Three starts for 822 is a loud knocking profile, and from barrier 3</strong Brooke King should be able to keep him out of trouble and have him building from the 600m. King’s ridden plenty here too (96 rides, 11 wins), so you’re not relying on a rider with no Morphettville feel.
A watch runner at a price if you’re playing wider: Scooped (7) has at least shown something (7-42) and can improve again if the speed is strong enough to bring closers into it.
Staking: Win bet Street Legal. If the market gets silly and he’s cramped, I’d rather play a smaller win and a saver exacta with Stand Alone.
Race 3: Sportsbet Get On Extra (Bm66) — 12:57, 1367
The market problem (even without seeing the prices) is that punters love the last-start winner and forget the race shape that got them there. Power Dancer comes off a win (6-4281) and has a decent enough Morphettville record across three starts, including a win and another placing. He’s a genuine chance again, but barrier 9</strong makes him answer more questions this time. He can win from there, sure. He just needs things to go right.
I’d rather side with the horse who gets the run and owns the profile: Polunin. Two starts for 13</strong is the sort of upside I want in a 3yo benchmark, and barrier 3</strong lets Harry Grace put him in the right lane from the jump. Grace has the strongest “place profile” of the riders engaged here (he hits the frame nearly half the time across 55 Morphettville rides), and that’s the kind of rider you want on a progressive 3yo in a race where luck will decide the minors.
The obvious threat is Breakfast (gate 5). He’s already shown he can win and his last two overall runs in the recent window returned one win from two, so you’re dealing with a horse who turns up and competes. If he controls the speed without pressure, he can pinch it.

Staking: Win bet Polunin. Saver only on Power Dancer if you’re worried the class edge trumps the draw.
The plays
I’m not trying to be a hero on a small card. I want the runners who can land in the first four without drama, then let their form do the rest.
NAP: Street Legal (Race 2, 12:22). He’s placed in both Morphettville runs, keeps finding the line, and the inside draw gives Harry Grace the cleanest map on the program.
Value: Placo (Race 1, 11:45). Staying races at this level get messy, but gate 1 plus a rock-solid recent sequence is exactly what you want when others are conceding map and weight.
Banker for multis: Polunin (Race 3, 12:57) as a top-two style anchor if you’re playing multiples. The draw and the rider are the safety net.
Each-way shape: Flash Alice (Race 1). She keeps putting herself there, and Grace is the sort who can steal lengths in running around Morphettville.
Course angle to remember: when you’re torn between two similar chances here, lean toward the jockeys with repeated Morphettville volume, because they don’t waste ground and that wins more races than “fitness whispers”.
Next time Stokes rolls a pair out like this again, don’t overthink it, just follow the intent.
