CF ORR STAKES BETTING SNAPSHOT

A field of nine are in action for the first Australian Group 1 of the calendar year and it is Mr Brightside that heads the market with Dabble after acceptances at the $1.80 quote, ahead of his last start conqueror and Champions Mile (1600m) winner, Pride Of Jenni, who is at $6.

The last start Australia Stakes (1200m) winning three-year-old, Veight, is a $7 chance, while the Golden Eagle (1500m) runner-up, Pericles, is at $7.50. Atishu ($12), Munhamek ($21), Ayrton ($21), Bustler ($41) and Buffalo River ($41) round out the field.

CF ORR STAKES FORM ANALYSIS

Four runners come into this first up, including the two favoured contenders in Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni. The latter ran fast time over the mile at Flemington back in November to go a whopping 18.2 lengths faster than standard with Mr Brightstide unable to bridge the gap on the leader, finishing over a length away.

Different circumstances over the 1400m at Caulfield with both fresh. Mr Brightside is three from three at the track and trip and that includes a PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) and a Memsie Stakes (1400m) win at his first two runs last spring. He was first up in the PB Lawrence Stakes and went 12.6 lengths faster than standard.

Pride Of Jenni is yet to win in six attempts when first up and was 6th over the 1400m at Flemington when resuming in the spring, going 7.2 lengths faster than standard. The Ciaron Maher-trained galloper is one of five last start winners in the race.

Veight took on the older horses when resuming at Moonee Valley at Group 2 level and arrived in time to defeat Southport Tycoon. He went a healthy 10.4 lengths faster than standard and is well and truly in the mix. The youngster did a few things wrong when second up at the track and trip last spring, finishing 5th behind Steparty before filling the exacta in the Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Ayrton and Buffalo River come out of the Barton Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Australia Day with Ayrton enjoying a nice run in transit to score, while Buffalo River led before going down in a blanket finish for 3rd. There should be plenty of speed in this race with Buffalo River and Pride Of Jenni in action.

Munhamek and Atishu are other last start winners. Munhamek provided one of the highlights of 2023 by getting up in the last stride in Damien Oliver’s last race as a jockey. That came in Perth over the 1400m. Atishu is a classy specimen but usually needs a few runs and further ground to produce her best.

Pericles and Bustler are others in the field. Both will probably need to produce a personal best to trouble the likes of Mr Brightside. Pericles was a first up winner over the 1400m at Rosehill in the spring with that coming in easier grade. Bustler is a promising galloper from WA but has been thrown into the deep end.

CF ORR STAKES TIPS AND BEST BETS

Hard to tip against Mr Brightside in the Orr Stakes. The Team Hayes-trained galloper has finished top two in his past eight starts, winning five. He had the answers early on at his last preparation over the 1400m at Caulfield and can be excused for going down behind Pride Of Jenni at the tail end of his spring campaign with that performance coming just after his narrow Cox Plate (2040m) loss. Race should pan out well for him with a couple to roll forward and he can stalk them from barrier 4 with Craig Williams in the saddle.
