Ranvet Stakes winners

The Ranvet Stakes (2000m) pits the middle-distance gallopers up against one another and has been won by some champion gallopers over the years. See who made our list of top 5 Ranvet Stakes winners since 2000.

In modern times, the feature race has been taken out by some outstanding gallopers.

Top 5 Ranvet Stakes winners.

1. TIE THE KNOT (2000, 2001)

A 13 time Group 1 winner, Tie The Knot held the record for most wins at that level until Black Caviar recorded 15 in 2013. He tops the list of Ranvet Stakes winners and won the event in 2000 and 2001. He picked up the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and the Tancred Stakes (2400m) either side of this race in 2000, while in 2001 he was too strong for Hill Of Grace at Rosehill. His first Group 1 win came in 1997 in the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) and his last was in the 2002 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), the fourth time he took out that event.

2. GRAND ARMEE (2005)

A tough galloper from the Gai Waterhouse camp, Grand Armee was a seven-time Group 1 winner and won the Ranvet Stakes in 2005. He raced six times that autumn for four wins, only missing out when first up in the Expressway Stakes (1200m), while he was run down by Makybe Diva in the Tancred Stakes (2400m). He bounced back from that defeat to claim the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), his second win in that event after knocking over Lonhro by a six-length margin the year prior.

3. THESEO (2009, 2010)

A two-time winner of the Ranvet Stakes, Theseo achieved that feat in 2009 and 2010. In 2009 he defeated the Melbourne Cup (3200m) winner, Viewed, while in 2010 he dug deep to lead all the way from Rangirangdoo. Another for Gai Waterhouse, Theseo won five Group 1 races with other successes coming in the Epsom Handicap (1600m), Champions Stakes (2000m) and Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).

4. EREMEIN (2006)

Eremein was a brilliant galloper that raced mainly in Sydney throughout his career. He swept through the Ranvet Stakes, Tancred Stakes and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2006 and as a three-year-old he claimed the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and the Australian Derby. Injuries and the 2007 Equine Influenza outbreak may have possibly reduced the amount of feature races that the Allan Denham-galloper could have won but his class gets him into our top 5.

5. DESERT WAR (2007)

Desert War is well known for his feats in taking out the Epsom Handicap on two occasions and is one of only three horses to do so, joining Super Impose and Chatham by taking out the Randwick mile in 2004 and 2005. But he was also very solid over the 2000m distance and defeated Confectioner in this race in 2007 before knocking over Haradasun a few weeks late in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. That came a the tail-end of his career and overall he picked up six Group 1 wins.
