Top 5 South Australian Derby winners.
1. MUMMIFY (2003)
Mummify sneaks in to top place on our list of top 5 South Australian Derby winners since 2000 and took out this race for the Lee Freedman stable in 2003 as a $2.10 favourite. He went on to bigger and better things in the spring of 2013, claiming the Underwood Stakes (1800m) and the Caulfield Cup (2400m), leading all the way in the spring feature. At four, he was around the mark behind the likes of Lonhro and Makybe Diva in a number of big races before chalking up another Group 1 win at five in the Caulfield Stakes (2000m). A winner at Group 1 level in Singapore, Mummify ran a brave 3rd in a Caulfield Cup that had a tragic aftermath with the champ succumbing to injury.
2. RUSSIAN CAMELOT (2020)
What could have been for Russian Camelot. The recently retired galloper was a breathtaking winner of the SA Derby in 2020, defeating the likes of Dalasan and Warning. He looked set to be the next big thing and won the Underwood Stakes (1800m) in 2020 before placing 3rd in the Cox Plate (2040m). His last run came in the All-Star Mile (1600m) and he was a close runner-up behind Mugatoo. Sadly, that would be last time we saw Russian Camelot on the track with the Danny O’Brien galloper bowing out with a tendon injury just after his All-Star Mile run.
3. DELICACY (2015)
One of the better gallopers to come out of Western Australia in recent years, Delicacy was a filly for the Bob Peters stable that scooped the local three-year-old races in Perth, including the WA Oaks (2400m) and the WA Derby (2400m). She then headed over the border to repeat that effort in South Australia, taking out the Australasian Oaks (2000m) before claiming this race ahead of Werther, who would go on to be a success story in Hong Kong.
4. REBEL RAIDER (2009)
The Leon MacDonald galloper is best remembered for his efforts in taking out the Victoria Derby (2500m) in 2008, lobbing as a $101 shot with Clare Lindop on board. The son of Reset was too good for Whobegotyou that day and proved that win was no fluke with dominant wins in the Chairmans Stakes (2000m) and the SA Derby (2500m) in the following autumn.
5. LEICESTER (2018)
Leicester sneaks into our Top 5 South Australian Derby winners since 2000 and took to the Chairmans Stakes/Derby double in 2018 before going on to race in Hong Kong as Helene Leadingstar. In 2021, the former Leon MacDonald galloper is still in work and has picked up two wins in HK, while he has been competitive in a number of Group class races.
