The second leg of the 2025 The Star Stradbroke Season takes place at Doomben Racecourse this Saturday with Doomben 10,000 Day. The feature contest is The Doomben 10,000, run over 1200 metres, is open to three-year-olds and above.
Takeover Target (2007), Apache Cat (2008 and 2009) and Giga Kick (2023) have all been victorious in this prestigious sprint contest at Doomben Racecourse in Brisbane. Here is a look at the best bets for this year’s meeting, including a selection in the feature.
BEST BET: SCHWARZ
Race 8 (The Goodwood)
Rider Craig Williams is bidding for a third straight victory in the Doomben 10,000 this year, and the Champion Jockey has an excellent chance of completing a hat-trick in the Group One contest on board Schwarz.
With Blake Shinn out of action due to a suspension, Williams has been booked for the ride on the sprinter in the $1 million contest, and he will be delighted with the opportunity. He partnered Giga Kick to triumph in 2023, while the excellent rider also prevailed in the latest running on board Bella Nipotina.
Schwarz was the winner of the Group One William Reid Stakes on his last outing. That was his third victory of the season, as he has also scored in the Group Two Darley Missile Stakes and Group Two Clamms Seafood Australia Stakes.
His triumph at Moonee Valley back in March proved Schwarz was an elite operator at Group One level in this sprint division. He has not been helped with a wide draw in this contest, but with a cool operator on board in Williams, he can get his horse into a good position from the barriers to give him the best chance of success.
SECOND BEST BET: GALLO NERO
Race 5 (Spirit Of Boom Classic)
Gallo Nero goes into the Group Two Spirit Of Boom Classic as the favourite, and he deserves his spot at the top of the betting. The son of Wooton Bassett has shown a lot of speed in his three racecourse appearances so far.
Michael, Wayne, and John Hawkes’s runner took two attempts to get off the mark. His maiden success came at Randwick over 1100m. Under the hands of Tyler Schiller, he won a hot handicap contest. Three horses that were behind him in that race have come out and won since.
Gallo Nero’s last outing came in The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions 2yo Classic at Gold Coast (1200m). He was involved in a tight finish with O’ Ole and Memo. Although he had to settle for third place, it was another smart run. Expect to see him take another big step forward here and prevail in group company for the first time in his career.
Best Value: Maison Louis
Race 9 (Rough Habit Plate)
Maison Louis goes into the Group Three Rough Habit Plate bidding to complete a hat-trick of wins, but he appears to have been underestimated, with Firm Agreement, Shangri La Spring and King Of Thunder taking up the positions at the top of the betting.
The three-year-old gelding showcased his stamina when he stepped up to 1900m at Canterbury last month. He stayed the distance strongly, out-battling two rivals in the closing stages of the race.
John O’Shea and Tom Charlton’s runner has been handed stall one in this race. This should allow Jamie Melham to get his horse into a nice position in the early stages of the contest. He looks to be a huge player in this strong three-year-old field.
