Goodwood Day is the next racing fixture on the Adelaide Racing Carnival calendar. The feature race at Morphettville Racecourse is a Group One contest for three-year-olds and above, run over the sprint distance of 1200 metres.
The roll of honour for The Goodwood includes Takeover Target (2009), Black Caviar (2012) and Trekking (2020). The winner of this race could be in contention to travel across to the UK later this year for one of the prestigious sprint races at Royal Ascot.
Here are the bets for the card at Morphettville, including a selection in the feature race.
BEST BET: GIGA KICK
Race 8 (The Goodwood)
Giga Kick is the highest-rated sprinter in the world, yet he will be receiving weight from half of his rivals in this Saturday’s The Goodwood at Morphettville. It looks like a great opportunity for Clayton Douglas’ star to take advantage of the set weights and penalty conditions and win his first Group One contest in almost two years.
The former Everest winner has been handed an allocation of 54.5kg, and that’s largely down to his inactivity during his injury. His trainer believes his draw in barrier 12 of 13 will help him, as Morphettville has been suiting those coming with a run on the outside of the track in recent months.
Rider Mark Zahra is set to be on board Giga Kick. He should be full of confidence, as the last time he rode at Morphettville, he landed the Australasian Oaks (Group One) and Robert Sangster Stakes (Group One) double on the same afternoon.
If everything goes to plan for Giga Kick in The Goodwood, his next appearance is likely to come in the Kingsford Smith Stakes (1300m) in Brisbane.
SECOND BEST BET: NEW YORK LUSTRE
Race 7 (Proud Miss Stakes)
New York Lustre won her fifth straight race when she prevailed at Moonee Valley last month. That triumph has earned her a shot at a stakes contest, and she can step up to Group Three level and claim some black type in the Proud Miss Stakes.
Enver Jusufovic’s runner will relish some give in the ground at Morphettville, so her connections will be hoping for some rain to fall before Goodwood Day. Her trainer has admitted he does not know where the ceiling is yet with his mare. Her last defeat came back in January 2024.
New York Lustre is not the most straightforward out of the barriers, as she can get restless at the start of her races. However, Carleen Hefel did a great job keeping the mare as relaxed as possible at Moonee Valley, and he can do the same again here in the Proud Miss Stakes.
Best Value: Chicago Storm
Race 6 (Cummings Stakes)
Chicago Storm finished third in the Cummings Stakes last year in the race won by En Francais. Unfortunately for his connections, his form has dipped since then, but there were signs on his last appearance at Morphettville that he was close to his best again, as he finished a close third in a handicap contest over 1600m.
David Aldridge’s runner is likely to be one of the horses setting the pace here, and if he is allowed to dictate things from the front, he may get into a nice rhythm and be difficult to peg back. The horse deserves another chance at this level, and this is a racecourse he knows very well.
Scheelite and Nonconformist are vying for favouritism at the top of the betting, but take a chance with Chicago Storm, a six-year-old who may not have even peaked yet in his career.
