BEST BET 🏆
Race 2: No.2 AWOL
Local trainer Nick Walsh saddles-up AWOL here who is third-up today and ticks enough boxes to suggest he can take this one out. Last start, the Sweynesse gelding came off a huge first-up win on this track when he was set an even bigger task against city-class gallopers at Doomben. That day, he had Cejay Graham in the saddle but not even the presence of an in-form rider could help him as he finished unplaced in a BM78 Hcp over the 1350m trip. Back on home soil today, he drops in grade today and has Emily Lang as the new pilot who brings a 1.5kg claim with her for this contest. Formerly with the Ciaron Maher stable, the four-year-old showed enough on his debut run here for Walsh to suggest he will take beating today.
NEXT BEST 🥈
Race 7: No.2 GILBERT’S GOLD
Trained here by Patrick Dillon, GILBERT’S GOLD is third-up today and fitter for two runs back, looks well placed here to bring up his second career win in this contest. Last start, the Altius gelding showed a ton of improvement from his first-up effort when he beat all but one home in a Class 2 Hcp, here over 1200m. He overraced for a large part of that race but still managed to finish within half a length of the winner that day. He drops in grade today and has Justin Stanley on board for the first time. Ideally drawn in gate three, he maps to be box-seating on settling and with a genuine pace on today, he should be fighting out the finish.
BEST VALUE 💰
Race 3: No.2 DEVIL KICK
Local galloper, DEVIL KICK has shares in this track, boasting five wins and seven minor placings from her 18 starts to date and looks poised to add another notch to that record today. Last start, the well-bred Scissor Kick mare bounced back from her only unplaced run in nine starts this campaign (at Mackay) when she returned to home soil and destroyed a BM60 field over the mile trip. Heavily-backed that day, she sat last to the turn and patiently ridden by Yvette Lewis, gradually worked into the fray and inside the final 200m, took control of the race and under hands and heels, went on to score by more than three lengths over the line. Lewis sticks with the mare today and going by her consistent efforts this time in, she looks a major player in this contest.
