It is Australian Cup Day at Flemington on Saturday. The event brings an end to the Flemington Racing Spectacular this Autumn. The feature race – the Australian Cup – is worth $2.5 million in prize money and it takes place over the distance of 2000m. It has been won in the past by Dulcify, Makybe Diva and Octagonal.
The card from Flemington also includes the Roy Higgins (2600m), with the winner earning a direct qualification into the 2025 Melbourne Cup at the same course. Here are the bets for the afternoon.
BEST BET: PRIDE ON JENNI
Race 8 (Australian Cup)
Pride Of Jenni returned to action earlier this month in the Group Two Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield, coming out of retirement to do so. It was her first run since featuring in the Champions Mile at Flemington back in November. She was back to her best, scoring comfortably by just under three lengths.
Ciaron Maher’s runner finished a close second in the Australian Cup in 2024. She was beaten by just a neck by the defending champion Cascadian. That run will give her connections a lot of confidence, as she has shown she enjoys this course and distance.
Pride Of Jenni could be set to clash with Cox Plate winner Via Sistina later this season in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Maher’s mare won that race last year at Randwick. For her to keep that match alive, she must produce a big performance here in the Australian Cup.
Mahler is also set to saddle Middle Earth and Light Infantry Man in this year’s Flemington Racing Spectacular contest. This race has eluded him so far in his career, but with Pride Of Jenni, he will have an excellent chance of adding it to his CV.
SECOND BEST BET: DEAKIN
Race 9 (Roy Higgins)
Since switching to Australia from Joseph O’Brien’s yard in Ireland, Deakin has won two of his four races. His latest victory came at Moonee Valley last month. He relished the step up in distance to 2500m to prevail.
The son of former Epsom Derby winner Australia won two races in Ireland in the early stages of his career. He prevailed at Roscommon (2300m) and Thurles (2500m). The French-bred horse also finished a respectable seventh of 19 runners in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Phillip Stokes is likely to be considering the Melbourne Cup for his five-year-old gelding this year, so a victory here will cement those plans. His trainer was quick to praise him after his five-length success in the Torney Cup. He believes there is much more to come from the Group Two winner, especially as he steps up in trip further.
Best Value: Vestas
Race 7 (World Pool Sprint Classic)
Vestas has won just once so far in her career, but there are more victories in the sprinter. She ran well at this course when she finished second in the Group Three Red Rose Stakes back in November. The filly went down by just half a length behind Amelita.
The Cranbourne-based filly has had a break since early January, so she comes into this World Pool Sprint Classic fresh. She looks a big price to prevail in what is an open-looking contest.
