Moonee Valley Preview & Best Bets – 07/09/2024
The Group One Moir Stakes is the feature race at Moonee Valley on Saturday. It takes place over 1000 metres, and it is open to three-year-olds and over. Here is a look at the best bet for the race and the rest of the card.
BEST BET: ESTRIELLA
Race 9
Estriella was one of the star three-year-old sprinters in Australia last season. She recorded three consecutive victories. Her first triumph came in a Group Three contest over 1100m at Caulfield. She then prevailed in back-to-back races at Flemington.
Ciaron Maher’s filly had to settle for fifth place of 10 runners in the Group One Robert Sangster Stakes at Morphetville on her final start of the campaign. The extra 200 metres in that race was probably a bit of a stretch for her.
This 1000m distance should be perfect for the daughter of I Am Invincible on her opening start of the season. She has a 100% record on her first run of the campaign, so she has shown she goes well when fresh. Take her to land her first Group One victory in the Moir Stakes.
SECOND BEST BET: EPIMELES
Race 7
Epimeles made a striking debut in a Listed race at Flemington (1400m) back in April. He showed no signs of any inexperience, scoring by just under two lengths under the hands of John Allen.
The son of Dundeel has been handed the ideal draw in barrier one here as he bids to make a winning return to action. He is a three-year-old to keep an eye on this season as there is a good chance this horse could climb to the highest level.
Public Attention is the obvious danger to Epimeles based on his victory at Caulfield, however, this is a much tougher race, so he is likely to have to settle for one of the minor honours in this contest.
Best Value: Corona Lad
Race 4
There was a lot to like about the way Corona Lad ran on strongly to prevail at Morphettville on his latest start. He has gone up in grade for that success, but he looks capable of taking another leap forward.
Connections are opting to make a quick appearance here, indicating the horse is in good order. He is also staying over the 2040m distance, which is a wise move, as it gives him plenty of time to be eased into the race.
