Caulfield Preview & Best Bets 31/08/2024
It is Memsie Stakes Day at Caulfield this Saturday. The Group One contest is the feature race on a packed 10-race fixture. The supporting races include the McNeil Stakes and Heath 1100 Stakes.
Here are our best bets from the card at Caulfield on Memsie Stakes Day.
BEST BET: PRIDE OF JENNI
Race 9
Pride Of Jenni won the All-Star Mile at Caulfield last season where she beat Mr Brightside and a strong field at the Melbourne-based racecourse. She also finished a close second in the Group One C F Orr Stakes, going down by a short head to Mr Brightside. The pair renew their rivalry once again here in the Memsie Stakes.
Ciaron Maher’s experienced mare has accumulated $8.7 million in prize money in what has been a stunning career. She remains one of the best 1,400m horses in Australia, as her official rating (122) suggests here. Only Mr Brightside (118) has a rating anywhere near as close as the seven-year-old.
It looks set to be another dominant season for Pride Of Jenni over this distance, and she can start by claiming the fourth Group One success of her career.
SECOND BEST BET: RECOMMENDATION
Race 5
Sprinter Recommendation recorded back-to-back victories at Caulfield in July in group races. He won the Sir John Monash Stakes over 1,100m, destroying the field by seven lengths. Then, just a few weeks late, he landed the Bletchingly Stakes at the same venue over the slightly longer trip of 1,200m.
The five-year-old gelding comes into the Heath Stakes looking to complete a hat-trick and it is hard to look past him based on his current form. He is unbeaten in three starts at this level and it should be a springboard to bigger prizes as the season progresses.
Arkansaw Kid is the kid obvious danger to Ciaron Maher’s sprinter, but this is his first run since May, so he may just need it to shake off the cobwebs.
BEST VALUE: LET’SFACETHEMUSIC
Race 6
Let’sfacethemusic has finished no worse than second place on his last three starts. He has just found one rival better than in each of those races.
The three-year-colt is still a maiden, but it won’t be long before he records his first success. His latest run came at this Group Three level. He was less than a length behind Band Of Brothers, who he will face again here, but he me 1.5kg less weight on his back.
Jamie Kah is likely to hold his horse up for as long as possible and he should doing his best work inside the final 200m, which may be enough to land the top prize.
