Moonee Valley Preview & Best Bets – 24/08/24
There is a nine-race card from Moonee Valley this Saturday which includes the Black Caviar Plate and Carlyon Stakes. We’ve got a preview of the card along with our best bets.
BEST BET: BOLD BASTILLE
Race 8
Bold Bastille showed a lot of talent in her two-year-old campaign last season, particularly last time out when prevailing at Bendigo. When asked to quicken in the final 400m of that race, she produced an impressive turn of foot.
Jamie Kah is likely to hold onto his filly for as long as possible in this race, and with several front runners in the field, there should be a strong pace, which will suit. She can pick them off late on in this 1000m contest.
Six-year-old gelding Mornington Glory is the chief danger, but Bold Bastille will be receiving 6.5kg due to the sex allowance, and that could prove a big difference in this contest.
SECOND BEST BET: DASHING DUCHESS
Race 1
Dashing Duchess showed what she was capable of at this course last time when coming home powerfully to prevail. A return to this track seems a smart move from her connections, even if the opposition this time around is stronger.
The five-year-old mare is very consistent and rarely runs a bad race. With just nine runners in the field, jockey Jamie Kah has several options out of the barriers from draw number eight. He is likely to tuck his mare in at the back of the pack in the early stages.
Although there are some good horses in this field, many of them are out of form. Dashing Duchess is the only runner to have won last time out. She can add another triumph to her tally in the opener.
Best Value: New York Hurricane
Race 5
15 runners are set to line up in the Dr Bernard Clarke Memorial, race five on the card at Moonee Valley. Lincoln Rocks is the hot favourite in this one, but he is worth taking on, as his odds are far too short for him to follow up from his success here on his last appearance.
New York Hurricane could not have been much more impressive when he scored by four lengths at Morphettville on his latest outing. He looks to be improving with every run, so if he takes another step forward here, he can land this handicap contest at tasty odds for trainer Liam Howley.
