Top 5 Tancred Stakes winners.

1. MAKYBE DIVA (2005)

Makybe Diva sits on top of this list and her performance to defeat Grand Armee in the Tancred Stakes in 2005 is one of the better runs that you will see. Grand Armee was flying at the time and scooted out to a big lead at the top of the straight. He was fresh off a Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) win but Makybe Diva had all the answers late in the piece. The legend of Australian turf won a staggering three Melbourne Cups (3200m) and what is sometimes overlooked is her efforts across the board in 2005 when she turned into a serious weight-for-age horse. In the spring she returned to take out the Memsie Stakes (1400m), Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and Cox Plate (2040m) as a seven-year-old before bowing out with a third Cup win.

2. TIE THE KNOT (1999, 2000)

The Tancred Stakes is one of four Group 1 races that Tie The Knot won on multiple occasions. He was a dual winner of the Sydney Cup (3200m) and the Ranvet Stakes (2000m), while he sits alongside Winx as a four-time winner of the Chipping Norton Stakes. Over the course of his career he won 12 times at the highest level and he defeated Intergaze in this race in 1999 and Arena in 2000. Shane Dye rode him on both occasions.

3. VERRY ELLEEGANT (2020)

Verry Elleegant enjoyed a superb time of it in 2020 and may just progress further up this list before her racing career ends. The Tancred Stakes was the first of four Group 1 wins for the Chris Waller mare in front of the empty crowds due to Covid-19. She landed more than four lengths in front of the next horse, Mustajeer, in the Tancred, while her other Group 1 wins came in the spring. They were in the Winx Stakes (1400m), Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and the Caulfield Cup (2400m) ahead of Anthony Van Dyck. As a three-year-old she took out the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m)/Australian Oaks (2400m) double.

4. ETHEREAL (2002)

Ethereal was a star New Zealand mare that was trained by Sheila Laxon and first came to Australia in the late autumn of 2001, winning the Doomben Roses (2020m) before rattling home to take out the Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm. After a series of top three finishes over slightly shorter trips, including one behind Northerly in the Caulfield Stakes (2400m), she claimed the Caulfield Cup (2400m)/Melbourne Cup (3200m) double as a four-year-old. Her last ever start came in the 2002 Tancred Stakes when she again arrived in time to defeat Universal Prince.

5. EREMEIN (2006)

Eremein loved getting out to 2000m and beyond. As a three-year-old he claimed the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and the Australian Derby and as an older horse in 2006 he swept through the Ranvet Stakes, Tancred Stakes and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. With Glen Boss on board in 2006, he defeated the Caulfield Cup (2400m) winner, Railings, as a $2.60 favourite. In total, he raced on 27 occasions for 12 wins and five of those came at the highest level.
