Hong Kong Preview & Best Bets – 14/04/2024

Hong Kong Tips for Sunday, February 25

Our form expert provides Hong Kong tips for today’s horse racing at Sha Tin Racecourse and gives his best bets.

Danny Shum has first-up specialist ROMANTIC WARRIOR fit and ready for this and going by his two recent trials, he will take beating again today. Last start, the reigning Cox Plate champion had to dig deep to stave-off the late challenges, but he prevailed in the end and took out the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup, here over 2000m with James McDonald in pride of place. That made it win number five from six rides for J.Mac and he remains the pilot for this contest. All boxes are ticked and glowing for the six-year-old who has won six of his seven attempts at the track and distance. He is already a three-time winner when resuming and won both his lead-up trials in preparation for this contest. A five-time Group 1 winner and nine-time winner at Sha Tin, he will have to do a lot wrong today to miss out on first prize.

Race 9:  No.3  GORGEOUS WIN

Danny Shum and Zac Purton team up here with GORGEOUS WIN who is yet to miss a podium finish in four career starts and has conditions to suit here for a real shot at back-to-back wins today. Last start, the Press Statement gelding enjoyed a dream run (settling one out, one back) and made it look easy in the run home. He took over inside the finals 200m and from there, looked even stronger as he hit the line with plenty in reserve. The Handicapper didn’t miss him however, and has lumped him with an extra 4.5kgs for this contest. Purton sticks with him here and he has drawn nicely in gate three where he maps to settle in the first half-dozen, close to the fence. If the pace in on and he settles with a sit, the extra weight may not matter and he can get the better of this field. At his peak after four runs in, he still looks the one to beat here.

Just half a dozen will contest this Class 2 event with the David Hall-trained ATULLIBIGEAL in line for back-to-back wins today. Last start, the Street Boss gelding returned to the winner’s circle when he finished best to claim victory in a Class 2, here over 1400m. He meets similar opposition today and has Zac Purton returning to steer the ship. He draws gate two and maps to take a sit behind the speed. Four of his six career wins have come at the Sha Tin track and he has won here over the mile previously. He lines-up here well and truly in the mix.
