Third-up here, the James Cummings-trained CHARACTER (best odds $6.50 with Palmerbet) strips fitter and the step-up in distance looks ideal for him. Last start, the Teofilo gelding came off a first-up win in a BM68 at Kembla Grange when he lined-up in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m). On a Heavy 8 that day, Jason Collett steered him home to finish third behind Mr Mozart. He ran his last 600m, 8.9 lengths quicker than benchmark, the best in this field. He steps up to a more suitable distance here and in ideal conditions for him, the Godolphin gelding looks right in the mix again.

Mick Price makes the trip north of the border here and saddles-up ANNAVISTO (best odds $3.60 with Sportsbet) and coming off a Group 3 victory, looks well placed here to make it fourth time lucky in Group 2 company. Last start, the Reliable Man mare was fresh off a 19-week spell when she destroyed them in the Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes over 1400m at Flemington. She ran that out, 15.2 lengths quicker than benchmark, not surprisingly setting a new personal best and the best effort here by 3 lengths. She also posted the fastest final 800m to 200m sectionals for the race. Jamie Kah was aboard that day and sticks with the mare here. She has drawn wide here which is the only concern but if Kah can have her near mid-field (or better) on settling, she should prove hard to hold out.

The Joe Pride-trained TAKSU (best odds $3 with Sportsbet) ticks all the boxes here and looks the best of the day. Last start, the Equiano gelding was second-up when he ploughed through the heavy conditions to put almost four lengths on them in a BM88, here over 1350m. He ran a new personal best that day, covering the trip, 7.6 lengths quicker than benchmark, also the best in this line-up. He is a track and distance winner, a winner when third-up and all five career wins have come on wet tracks. Tyler Schiller remains aboard and claims 2kgs as well. Drawn the fence here, defence rests Your Honour, he looks the goods in this field.
