BEST BET: SEA KING
Race 7
Sea King is set for his first run in Australia in the Bendigo Cup. The former UK-based stayer moved from Sir Mark Prescott’s stable to Harry Eustace back in September. The six-year-old gelding has an impressive CV, with some big race wins in Europe.
The five-time winner scored over 2600 metres at Ayr earlier this year. On his final start for Prescott, he finished sixth of 20 runners in the Ebor at York, one of the most valuable handicap races run in Europe.
The son of Sea The Stars has the ability to have a lot of success in Australia in this division in the final years of his career. Eustace is the perfect trainer to get the best out of him, and that can begin in the Bendigo Cup.
SECOND BEST BET: MANTUA
Race 8
Mantua has been in excellent form recently heading into this penultimate race on Bendigo Cup Day. He was successful at Sandown-Hillside by just under a length in a race over 1000 metres. He then came very close to following up with another triumph but had to settle for second place at Seymour (1100m).
Ciaron Maher’s runner will have 2kg less racing weight on his back this time around. He will be receiving weight from all nine rivals in this field at Bendigo. Expect to see him up with the early pace, and he will take some passing.
The four-year-old should be in peak fitness following his activity over the last couple of months. He is the one to beat here.
Best Value: Vivideel
Race 6
Vivideel ended last season in excellent form, scoring at Warrnambool on his final start in April. He returns here in a hot race off top weight of 61.5kg and the five-year-old should not be underestimated.
The versatile New Zealand-bred horse is having his first appearance at this racecourse, but it is likely to be a venue that will suit him. He is over-priced to make a winning start to his new campaign.
