BEST BET: EL CASTELLO
Race 7
El Castello has had the perfect campaign so far, with three victories from three starts. He has looked better the further he has run over, so it is no surprise he tops the betting for the Victoria Derby this year.
Anthony Cumming’s colt got off the mark at Warwick Farm (1400m) on his seasonal reappearance. He then won a Group Three contest at Rosehill (1800m), finishing just under two lengths ahead of the highly rated Swiftfalcon. His hat-trick was then completed in the Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.
The son of Castelvecchio remains open to improvement, and with three runs behind him in the campaign, he is fit and ready to shine on the big stage at Flemington on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
SECOND BEST BET: TRAFFIC WARDEN
Race 6
Traffic Warden has done very little wrong so far in his two starts this season. He has been involved in a close finish in both of his appearances. The Godolphin runner battled to victory in a Group Two contest over 1200m at Rosehill, while on his latest appearance, he was denied by a short head in the Group One Golden Rose (1400m) at the same course.
James Cummings’ runner has appeared just once at Flemington in his career. He was successful at the Victoria-based venue back in March as a two-year-old, landing the Produce Stakes. He was a comfortable winner of that Group Two contest.
The Street Boss colt has bags of speed, and he is likely to leave his rivals trailing in the closing stages of the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
Best Value: Alsephina
Race 8
Alsephina finished in the placings last time out at Caulfield in the Group One Toorak Handicap, coming home third behind Antino and Craig respectively. The consistent mare should be in the mix at the finish again in the Empire Rose Stakes.
Atishu and Orchestral deserve their places at the top end of the betting for this race but based on what she has been delivering this season, Alsephina is the best value to land the penultimate contest of the afternoon.
