BEST BET: BUCKAROO
Race 9
Buckaroo came very close to winning the Group One Turnbull Stakes at Flemington earlier this month, but he had to settle for second place behind the talented Via Sistina. There was just a head separating those two horses as they crossed the line in the 2,000-metre contest.
Chris Waller’s runner was a winner at this course last month when he prevailed in the Underwood Stakes over a shorter distance. He won that Group One race emphatically by just over three lengths.
The six-year-old has been given a good draw in barrier eight, which is crucial in this large field. He has the class and stamina to land the Caulfield Cup, continuing his excellent start to the new season.
SECOND BEST BET: PINSTRIPED
Race 10
Pinstriped won over this course and distance back in August, winning the Group One Memsie Stakes. It was a career-best performance from the gelding in what was the third success of his career.
Enver Jusufovic’s runner was unable to add to his tally last time out at Flemington in the Makybe Diva Stakes. He struggled on heavy ground in that race, eventually finishing seventh of eight runners, and a long way behind the winner.
A return to this C&D in the Moonga Stakes will help the six-year-old. He will need to carry top weight in the field, but it is unlikely to be enough to prevent him from another triumph at this course.
Best Value: Quintessa
Race 8
Quintessa was a Group One winner as a three-year-old in New Zealand. Since switching to Mark Walker’s stable in Australia, she has run well at the highest level, as she was fourth in the Australian Guineas and Australian Oaks.
The four-year-old filly made a winning return when landing the Group Three Cockram Stakes over 1200 metres at this course. She then produced a disappointing performance at Flemington in the Elope Stakes, however, there were legitimate excuses for that run, as she appeared to struggle on the ground.
This race looks competitive on paper, but from a good barrier draw, Quintessa is excellent value to prevail from a top weight of 58.5kg.
