BEST BET: BIRDMAN
Race 7
Birdman arrived in Australia last month, joining Chris Waller’s strong yard. The former Irish-based gelding has a big reputation following four runs in the UK and Ireland for trainer Jessica Harrington. He is a two-time winner and there looks set to be more to come from him.
After victories at Cork (2400m) and Navan (2600m) respectively, the son of Free Eagle then finished a close third in the Group Two Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot behind a couple of smart runners from Aidan O’Brien’s yard.
Waller has clearly seen enough from his latest recruit to throw him into the Geelong Cup on his opening start in this country. The four-year-old has the class to land the feature and put himself in contention for some big races in this division this season.
SECOND BEST BET: LAVALIER
Race 5
Since stepping up to this distance of 2200m, Lavalier has produced two solid performances in defeat. He was two lengths behind the winner in the Victoria Derby at Flemington, while he stayed on strongly in the closing stages of a Listed race at the same course.
The Godolphin runner is handed a great opportunity in this Geelong Classic. If he steps up from what he has shown so far this season, he would be hard to beat in this race, as this looks like a much weaker race than he has contested recently.
The three-year-old colt has a great draw in barrier three, so jockey Ben Melham will be able to settle his runner on the inside rail in the early stages of the race. He is one of the best bets of the afternoon on this card from Geelong.
Best Value: Kaizad
Race 8
Kaizad needs to bounce back from two disappointing outings earlier this year, which is why he is not one of the horses at the top end of the betting for this 1200m sprint contest in race eight. However, he should be fresh again now which makes him a much different proposition.
The Group Three winner ran well over this distance on just his second career appearance. Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s gelding was runner-up at Canterbury Park, beaten by less than a length. He represents great value in this open-looking race.
