BEST BET: PROGNOSIS
Race 9
Japan have been dominant on the world stage over the last 12 months, and they have an excellent chance of landing another major prize in this year’s Cox Plate. Prognosis can give trainer Mitsumasa Nakauchida a first victory in the Group One contest at Moonee Valley.
As you would expect with one of the leading Japanese middle distance runners, Prognosis has contested some of the biggest races across the globe. He was second in the QEII Cup at Sha Tin back in April, going down by just a neck in Hong Kong to last year’s Cox Plate winner Romantic Warrior.
The six-year-old warmed up for this race with an appearance in Sapporo Kinen at Sapporo back in August. Expect to see him tucked away early doors and make his challenge inside the final 400 metres of this race. He is the one to beat.
SECOND BEST BET: FIRESTORM
Race 10
Firestorm did not disgrace herself in a Group One contest at Randwick earlier this month. The proven Group One operator has been eased in grade here and she can take advantage of this easier assignment in the final race on Cox Plate Day.
Chris Waller’s mare is stepping up in distance to 2040m and she should appreciate the stiffer test in this Group Three race. Rider Damian Lane will most likely cling on to the inside rail from barrier four, ensuring she takes the shortest route around the course.
The two-time winner will have sharpened up for her run at Randwick and she is the standout entry in the Tesio Stakes.
Best Value: Uncle Bryn
Race 8
Uncle Bryn won the Group Three MRC Foundation Cup at Caulfield two runs back in what was an impressive performance. Unfortunately for his connections, he was unable to follow it up last time in the Group One Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.
The seven-year-old gelding has the perfect draw in barrier one here. He will need to carry the top weight of 58kg, but he can successfully concede weight to the rest of this field.
