BEST BET: VIA SISTINA

Race 8

Via Sistina was many pundits’ pick for the Melbourne Cup this year, however, her connections opted against the world’s most valuable handicap race, and instead are aiming for the Champions Stakes. That may prove a smart move as she looks the one to beat in the feature race on Champions Stakes Day at Flemington.

The six-year-old mare produced one of the most dominant Cox Plate performances in recent years when she won the Group One contest last month. She put just over eight lengths between herself and her rivals as she crossed the finish line.

With three victories from four starts this season, Via Sistina has had an excellent campaign. A triumph in the Champions Stakes will be the cherry on the cake for her connections.

SECOND BEST BET: GIGA KICK

Race 6

Giga Kick fell just short in the Everest at Randwick last month, finishing a short head behind Bella Nipotina in the Group One sprint contest over 1200m. The same pair are likely to battle it out at the finish of the Champions Sprint at Flemington, but this time, the placings can be reversed.

Clayton Douglas’ runner has often enjoyed himself at Flemington. He has been successful twice before at the Victoria-based racecourse. The gelding finished fifth in this race 12 months ago, but it was a much stronger race than he will encounter here. This is a great opportunity for him to secure a victory on Champions Stakes Day in the sprint division.

Best Value: Pride Of Jenni

Race 7

Pride Of Jenni went into the Cox Plate as one of the fancied runners to prevail at Moonee Valley, but it didn’t quite happen for the mare, as she faded in the final 400 metres of the race. She is now dropping back to 1600m, a distance she has had a lot of success over in her career.

Ciaron Maher’s runner won the Feehan Stakes at Moonee Valley back in September and she ran well in the Group One King Charles III Stakes, finishing second behind Ceolwulf, beaten by less than a length. A repeat of that form suggests.
