BEST BET: VAUBAN
Race 7
Vauban is set for his second shot at the Melbourne Cup this year. The talented European horse finished 14th in the race 12 months ago but he looks much better prepared this time around for the richest handicap in the world.
Irish trainer Willie Mullins has had the Melbourne Cup in mind all year for his six-year-old gelding, so he should be in peak condition as he bids to continue Europe’s excellent recent record in this race.
The dual-purpose horse, who has won some major races over hurdles, won the Group Two Lonsdale Cup at York earlier this season, beating a strong field that included Point Lonsdale and Gregory. He then finished second behind Kyprios in the Irish St Leger at the Curragh. That form is as strong as any horse in this field can boast.
With Ryan Moore in the saddle, Vauban has the best jockey in the world right now. The pair can celebrate success on the biggest day of the year in Australian horse racing.
SECOND BEST BET: AVIATRESS
Race 9
Aviatress showed bags of speed when she landed the Group Three Senet Northwood Plume Stakes at Caulfield last month. The four-year-old filly surged clear of her rivals in the closing stages of that 1200 metre contest, scoring by just under three lengths.
The lightly raced filly now faces her toughest test yet in The Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes, and she can rise to the challenge. The extra 200 metres in this contest will suit her, as will a strong pace, which you would expect in this large field.
Best Value: Makram
Race 6
At the age of eight, Makram is the oldest runner in the Furphy Plate, and although he is in the back end of his career now, this horse still retains all his enthusiasm for racing, as he showed last time out at this course when he was just a length behind the winner in the Group Two Blamey Stakes.
This horse is often at his best when fresh at the start of the season, so it would be no surprise to see him land the top prize here in race six on Melbourne Cup Day.
